Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering.
It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, coastal engineering, materials engineering transportation engineering, water resources engineering, construction engineering, surveing & geo-sapatial engineerin and municipal or urban engineering. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies. The Department of Civil Engineering is a broad and diverse engineering discipline that deals with many aspects of improving the human living environment, e.g., water resource management, constructing stable buildings and bridges, safe environmental systems, building dams for hydropower and flood control, providing comfortable work environment. Today our professors and researchers are working on problems that go far beyond these traditional applications with innovative approaches needed to survive in a global society.
The Department of Civil Engineering involves the application of principles of physics, mathematics, thermodynamics, control, energy, mechanics and physiology to designing and manufacturing the built artifacts and systems. It has been one of the fundamental engineering disciplines and recently combines emerging technologies such as IT, NT and BT.
The need for civil engineers will increase in future as the society tries to solve for the problems of urbanization, decaying infrastructures, global warming, need of comfortable and healthy work environment, and an increase in the human population. The civil engineering job market will yield opportunities both nationally and internationally.
The Department of Civil Engineering in Kangwon National University (KNU) offers a well-rounded learning experience that supports the entire spectrum of the related industry. The Department includes distinguished M.S. and Ph.D. programs in areas of Civil Engineering with 9 full-time tenured or tenure track faculties. The department is committed to educate M.S. and Ph.D. students to be able to apply their scientific and engineering knowledge to challenging problems.
The architectural engineering is a field of practical science that actualize design drawing in the construction site. The department has 4-year curriculum, where students study on structural engineering and materials, construction engineering and management, architectural environment & equipment. The department incubates a professional engineer as an maestro in the construction site.
